Retreat into digital landfill (2022)

Retreat into Digital Landfill is a short video essay derived from the ongoing web-based project, Digital Landfill. Inspired by Byung-Chul Han's "Aesthetic of the Smooth" and Venkatesh Rao's "Domestic Cozy," the project responds to the intense consumer culture around digital images and how that aggression triggers a nihilistic desire to remain inactive. As an artist, I am constantly lured to perform as productive members of this endless cycle of overproduction and overconsumption on social media. Turning curiosity-driven/ self-reflective art practice into audience-driven performances. Therefore, this video expresses concern around my own complicity within the image culture and a desire to retreat into a discarded space. Perhaps, there is creative potential behind the quietness and messiness.
