THE LABYRINTH OF DIGITAL BODIES (2022)Project by Lingxiang Wu, Sound Design by Robert Schwarz
As we spend more time and energy in digital online spaces like TikTok and Instagram, performing online has become a new form of labor in the post-pandemic era. I see a collective desire for hypervisibility in the digital ecosystem by investigating the reproduction of bodies on social media. The Labyrinth of Digital Bodies is a VR maze where viewers will encounter again with these performative bodies and messages from social media but in a more distressed and anti-aesthetic manner that represent the aggression hypervisibility brings in the online world. The project contemplates the optimization of our bodies influenced by the attention economy as we constantly grind our identity to accommodate the fast-paced digital culture. Becoming spam, an ultimate mesh of likable qualities, niches, or gimmicks, which only results in mediocracy. Through art, I wonder if these spam-like bodies can also become contemplative that helps viewers to linger and enjoy a brief moment of reflection.
